Different Types of Hinges and Their Uses

A door hinge is a mechanical bearing connecting two solid objects, typically allowing only a limited rotation angle between them. A few parts of the steel and brass door hinges are mentioned below:

  • Leaf: also known as the wing, the flat part of the hinges that are screwed into the door and frame.
  • Knuckle: the middle part, usually cylindrical, where the leaves meet. This is the part that allows the door to move.
  • Pin: a long piece that slides into the knuckle, which keeps the two leaves together. One can remove the door slab from the frame when the pin is pulled out.
  • Sleeves: the round pieces that make up the knuckle that hold the pin in place.

Door hinges act as a kind of joint between doors and the support system so that the doors can be easily rotated. However, low-quality hinges never provide such a level of security. To cater to this, TDC Hinges only deals in super-class hinge quality.

Understanding the Door Hinges

Making the door hinge choice is necessary to let the door bear the load. Majorly there are two types of loads:

  • Vertical load: It is a type of load that is determined by the overall weight of the door.
  • Horizontal load: It is a type of load that depends primarily on the height-to-width ratio of the door.

Another crucial factor that plays a great role in determining the type of door hinge to be used is the frequency.

  • Low frequency: A door that is used less than 10 times a day.
  • Medium frequency: A door that is used 10 to 25 times each day.
  • High frequency: A door that is used more than 25 times a day.

Let’s Talk About the Types of Door Hinges Available in the Market

Butt Hinge

Butt hinges are one of the most well-known hinges, and they are also known as continuous mortise hinges for every door, cabinet, and window. These hinges are useful for interior doors and windows steel, but they need extra care to prevent rust on the exterior.

Flush Hinge

Flush hinges take less space than butt hinges as they are smaller than others. These hinges do not need corners to cut, and one leaf easily fits in the door. These hinges are flexible and best for light-weight cabinets, doors, furniture, and cupboards.

Barrel Hinge

Barrel hinges look like a barrel which is very effective to install as a joint drilled in the required area. These hinges are most popular for low loads on the radius and gates.

Butterfly Hinge

As its name suggests, these hinges look like butterflies to give furniture's engaging and interesting look. Butterfly hinges are very beneficial for places where hinges are visible.

Piano Hinge

Piano hinges are long continuous hinges that support the cupboard or cabinets. It is also known as continuous surface hinges. Which have flat edges with long lengths. Piano hinges help to cover the length of two objects besides giving support.

Corner Hinge

Corner hinges are mounted internally and contain a pin that is taken out when the door is open. It allows the door to be removed for its maintenance and access.

Inset Hinge

An inset hinge allows the door to swing further out as it opens so that the door doesn't touch the face frame. The cup on an inset hinge is placed further away from the face frame as it's in a closed position. This allows for proper spacing so that it fits within the side style of the door.

Offset Hinge

These are the hinges that offer better clearance to the doorways. Unlike inset hinges, it doesn't allow the door to swing furthest away upon opening.

Lift-off Hinge

For the most frequently used doors, lift-off door hinges are best to fill the purpose. It allows easy removal of the doors whenever needed for maintenance purposes.
